Functional Movement Screen Testing

The Functional Movement Screen (FMS) is an innovative functional movement grading system that documents patterns key to normal function. By screening these patterns, the FMS assists in the identification of functional limitations and asymmetries. These are issues that can cause chronic injury and reduce the recovery rate due to distorted body awareness. The goal of the FMS test is not to diagnose orthopedic problems but rather to seek out poor movement patterns with the intention to retrain the body to move in the most stable and efficient way possible.

The FMS test places the individual in extreme positions where weaknesses and imbalances become noticeable if appropriate stability and mobility is not utilized. The test consists of a series of simple tests that generate the Functional Movement Screen Score, which is used to identify patterns, giving a good baseline of abilities, and track progress through routine rescreening.

Orthopedic + Fracture Specialists has several FMS certified practitioners. This evaluation system is used at times in our outreach programs and as an in clinic screening tool for appropriate patients. Used in conjunction with targeted functional analysis, hands on evaluation, and appropriate manual examination we are able to put together a picture of how the body is able to tolerate stress. When the body is unable to absorb stress properly breakdown often occurs in overload areas. Looking at movement patterns allows us to target the cause of an injury verses just treating the effect.
